The Village of Mayville is situated at the northern end of Chautauqua Lake and serves as a natural gateway to the Lake. The lake is surrounded by rolling hills, rural countryside and woodlands. Around the lake, there are numerous small villages and communities, including two Amish settlements. The Amish sell many homemade - handcrafted items such as baked goods, quilts and fine cabinetry. You may visit them any day but Sunday and please refrain from taking their pictures.

Just 4 miles south along Route 394 is the well-known community and center for fine and performing arts, Chautauqua Institution. During their summer season between the last week of June and the first week of September, the Institute features famous performers in their outdoor amphitheater, operas in Norton Hall, plays, symphonies and many lectures. Educational courses are available on many subjects for all ages.

Chautauqua Lake hosts several summer camps for children as well as Midway Park which has been an established family business for nearly a century. They offer a roller skating rink, arcade, children and young adult rides as well as picnic areas and boat docks for park visitors.

Mayville is the site of the Chautauqua Lake Central School which is a state-of-the-art Pre-K-12 facility that opened in the Fall of 2000. The building, which is the size of three football fields, houses 3 main levels of education: Pre-K- Grade 5, Middle Grades 6-8 and the High School Departments. There are also numerous classroom used by the B.O.C.E.S. programs. Extensive playing fields allow for many sporting activities.

Mayville is the site of the Chautauqua County seat of offices including the Court House , the Sheriff's Office and the County Jail. This picturesque village houses two banks, two pharmacies, a large chain store grocery, a hardware store, medical and dental offices, law offices, hair salons, many restaurants, motels, gas stations, a marina and recreational vehicle outlets, gift and antique shops and many other businesses.
